Meet Chef Dan Smith
Chef Dan Smith is the acclaimed former chef-owner of John Andrews Farmhouse Restaurant in South Egremont, Massachusetts—a Berkshires institution he built and operated for 33 years.
After studying agriculture at Iowa State University and training in kitchens from The Ritz-Carlton to Connecticut's Ragamont Inn, Dan fell in love with the Berkshires in 1988. Two years later, he purchased what would become John Andrews Farmhouse and spent over three decades defining what regional, farm-to-table cuisine could be.
Described by Travel & Leisure as "the architect of modern Berkshire cooking," Dan's approach is rooted in his agricultural background and deep relationships with local farmers and food producers. He cultivated a garden on the restaurant property to supply his 73-seat dining room, creating seasonal menus driven entirely by what was growing in the region.
His work has earned national recognition:
James Beard Foundation dinners—both collaborative Berkshire chef events (starting in 2010) and three solo presentations
World's 25 Best Farmstead Experiences by The Daily Meal (2013)
Annual Wine Spectator Award of Excellence
TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence
Beyond the accolades, Dan has been deeply committed to his community—contributing to local nonprofits and the arts, and volunteering for 20 years with the Railroad Street Youth Project's culinary apprenticeship program, mentoring young chefs and hosting the annual fundraiser dinner at John Andrews.
After selling the restaurant in spring 2023, Dan and his wife Iona have chosen Kennebunkport for their next chapter. He's now focusing exclusively on private dining experiences—bringing his decades of expertise, his farm-to-table philosophy, and his commitment to seasonal, regional cuisine to intimate gatherings like this one.
This dinner is his introduction to the Kennebunkport community—and a preview of what he's creating here.
